Innocent is one of Solomon's Children's real success stories. He came to the attention of our trustees in early 2001, 18 months after the death of his eldest brother, Leander, who had been the household's main breadwinner. Prior to his death, Leander had paid school fees for all of his younger siblings, including Innocent. Realising Innocent's exceptional academic potential, Leander had sent him in Ntare School, Mbarara Town, one of the oldest, and most prestigious, schools in Southern Uganda. However, after Leander's death, Innocent was forced to leave Ntare and to return to the rural village of his birth.
By buying and selling goats he had reared himself, Innocent did manage to raise the school fees at a local, rural secondary school. However, the level of instruction offered at such a school was woefully inadequate for someone of his abilities. In 2001, the trustees of Solomon's Children were able to move Innocent to a much better school - Nganwa High School, in Kabwohe Town - for his A levels. In late 2003, Innocent achieved a quite brilliant set of A level results, and qualified for a public sponsorship to Makerere to read Social Work and Social Administration. This is one of the most prestigious degree courses offered at Makerere. Innocent recent told us that: "I am really grateful for everything you have done for me thus far. I want to assure you that I will do my best to continue laying a firm foundation for my future". |
